I completely understand this. However, my mom never quite made it to this stage. It was impending, and I had plenty of calls from her that made no sense. But she went downhill quickly and in the period of a month, was in and out of hospital and assisted living for rehab, in hospice for a week, then passed away a few days ago. It was sad that she never went home, but at the same time, a relief not to go through what you have described, especially as an only child to someone who also had no friends.
